Chapter 4

Emma didn’t care for the way things were going. Not one bit. She could not wait to shake this little town off her shoes and get home, where people knew what she was to them—their boss and the woman who made things happen. Yes, she supposed she was a terror, but when things did go her way, she thought she was quite generous with her advice on how to make it better the next time. Whether or not you followed it…well, there would be consequences.

Since the police had taken them one at a time into a room to talk about the events that had brought them here, she’d been alone in a cell. There were walls up and a door that didn’t allow her to interact with anyone else in the jail. Not even her family, which pissed her off to no end.

Also, when she was brought her meals, nothing ever what she considered tastefully done, it was shoved into a slot at the bottom of the door, and no words were exchanged. Emma needed contact with someone. Her anger was just building and building. Didn’t they understand that? If she didn’t get to make someone dance to her tune soon, she thought perhaps she was going to explode. All these ideas running around in her head were just too much to not voice. Since she’d been in here too, they’d taken away her pencil and paper. A pencil, of all things.

Now here she was in a courtroom with, of all things, a colored woman sitting up on the podium. She’d have to see about this when she left here. Emma thought she’d come here a few times a month to make sure things were going the way any God-fearing person should want them. This was just out of order, and it was high time that someone took control of things going on around here. But she needed to be home, where people would give her the respect she was due.

“Mrs. Anchor, do you know why you’re in my courtroom today?” She wasn’t going to justify answering the woman. She was so much lower than her that Emma thought someone needed to put her in her place. “I’m speaking to you, Mrs. Anchor. I am well within my rights to—”

“You have no rights in this country. Why don’t you go back home? Where the rest of your clan is from?” No one said a word and Emma loved it. “You no more belong up there than I do in jail. If this were going on in my town, you can bet I’d have you run out on a rail. Christ, what is this world coming to when a nappy-headed woman such as yourself can—?”

“That is quite enough.” Ms. Barn walked to stand in front of her then. It was almost as if she was larger than life the way she just stood there looking like some kind of model. Dumbass cow. “You do have a mouth on you, don’t you? Well, you had a mouth.
